“I was always a curious child and I liked helping people”, Dr. Kim Brewer, Research Scientist with the Biomedical Translational Imaging Centre (BIOTIC) says. “But I didn’t think that working in a clinical setting was the right choice for me. Instead, I found that medical research was the best career path for me to continue helping others.”

Dr. Brewer’s research tests new cancer therapies, using imaging to study how new immune based therapies work with the body’s immune system to fight off cancer, and how to improve them. She’s been with the IWK since 2015 and really appreciates the fact that her lab is within the health centre.

“It’s so valuable to me to be reminded on a daily basis of the focus of my research, which is helping patients and their families,” Dr. Brewer says. “It’s also important to be able to collaborate with clinicians as well.”

Dr. Brewer is grateful for the IWK Research Services infrastructure – including the support staff and opportunities to apply for project grants.
